Today in Calgary, the Surrey Orcas Water Polo Club made club history when our 14U boys team won our first National Championship League medal. In just their first full year of NCL competition our 14U boys took the competition by storm and came home with the bronze medal.
The boys guaranteed themselves a berth in the medal round by winning their first two games in impressive form. In the final game of the preliminary round the boys were holding onto a one goal lead heading into the second half. Fraser Valley poured it on in the third and fourth quarters and we eventually fell 9-5.
Undeterred, the Orcas entered the medal round to do battle with the eventual gold medalists, Calgary Wild. This time the boys got off to an even better start. We lead 3-0 after the first quarter and were ahead 4-2 at the half. We were behind by a single goal after three quarters, but in the end the Wild prevailed 10-6.
The boys entered the bronze medal game determined to make the best of the lessons from the previous two games. Pacific Storm opened the scoring early in the first quarter. The Orcas countered with a goal of their own less than thirty seconds later. From that point forward the boys refused to surrender the lead. When the final buzzer sounded the Orcas had won the bronze medal with a hard fought 12-8 victory.
