Spartans 16U Boys Win NCL Bronze

The Spartans are comprised of athletes from Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland who came together to play in Water Polo Canada’s uber competitive National Championship League.

Yesterday in Calgary, the Spartans 16U Boys Team came away with the bronze medal at the NCL Western National Championship.

In just their first year of NCL competition, the Spartans grew and developed all season long under the direction of Head Coach Vladimir Ushakov.

The Spartans, which includes five members of the Surrey Orcas Water Polo Club, entered the tournament having finished in fourth place in league play.

They won three of their four tournament games en route to their bronze medal finish. Their only loss came at the hands of the eventual silver medal winner, Team Saskatchewan. This game turned into a nail biter that required six rounds of a shootout to determine a result. Undeterred, the Spartans responded with a dominant victory in their final game and claimed the bronze medal.

Congratulations to our Orcas players and their Spartans teammates on an exciting and inspirational first season in NCL competition.

Orcas 14U Win GOLD

Surrey Orcas 14U Team 2 takes the GOLD medal at the 2017 Lower Mainland Water Polo Championship.

The Surrey Orcas 14U Team 2 capped off their “cinderella season” with an impressive display of teamwork and determination at today’s LMWPL championship tournament. They put their undefeated season record of 11,0,2 on the line and added four more victories when it mattered the most.

Perhaps more amazing than the victories themselves was the manner in which the games were won. The second game of the preliminary round seemed destined to end in a tie. An explosive breakaway goal with just 17 seconds remaining in the game clinched the victory and a berth in the medal round.

The first game of the medal round turned into an epic match in which neither team would yield. With the game tied after regulation play, the players lined up for a two minute sudden death overtime period. Overtime would solve nothing so the game moved to a five player shootout. It took all five Orcas’ shooters to seal the deal as the Orcas staked their claim for a shot at gold.

The gold medal game was a back and forth affair in which neither team could gain an advantage. Fittingly, this game was tied at the end of regulation play and they were headed to overtime, yet again. A shootout would not be necessary as the result of a well placed shot that sent the Orcas’ fans into a frenzy.

The team wants to thank and acknowledge their fellow Orcas athletes that have encouraged, supported and challenged them at practices and scrimmages all season long. And a special thank you goes out to coaches Vlad and Vladimir, our parents, and the volunteers that have made all of this possible.
