Orcas 14U Win GOLD

Surrey Orcas 14U Team 2 takes the GOLD medal at the 2017 Lower Mainland Water Polo Championship.

The Surrey Orcas 14U Team 2 capped off their “cinderella season” with an impressive display of teamwork and determination at today’s LMWPL championship tournament. They put their undefeated season record of 11,0,2 on the line and added four more victories when it mattered the most.

Perhaps more amazing than the victories themselves was the manner in which the games were won. The second game of the preliminary round seemed destined to end in a tie. An explosive breakaway goal with just 17 seconds remaining in the game clinched the victory and a berth in the medal round.

The first game of the medal round turned into an epic match in which neither team would yield. With the game tied after regulation play, the players lined up for a two minute sudden death overtime period. Overtime would solve nothing so the game moved to a five player shootout. It took all five Orcas’ shooters to seal the deal as the Orcas staked their claim for a shot at gold.

The gold medal game was a back and forth affair in which neither team could gain an advantage. Fittingly, this game was tied at the end of regulation play and they were headed to overtime, yet again. A shootout would not be necessary as the result of a well placed shot that sent the Orcas’ fans into a frenzy.

The team wants to thank and acknowledge their fellow Orcas athletes that have encouraged, supported and challenged them at practices and scrimmages all season long. And a special thank you goes out to coaches Vlad and Vladimir, our parents, and the volunteers that have made all of this possible.

Come experience European water polo coaching at its best!

European Water Polo Academy is a comprehensive training camp with Surrey Orcas’ European coaches who will teach both from the deck and in the water!

Former Olympian water polo player and competitive swimmer Vladimir Ushakov and International player and goalie Vlad Kruglikovskiy will provide one week of European professional style practice consisting of many drills for body position, legs, shooting and goalie drills!

With a focus on dry land training, water balance and mobility, specific passing and shooting techniques, position training, shot blocking and game function will be covered. This camp will also involve a curriculum for goalies that will include, but not be limited to base position technique, ball tracking training, balance and mobility training, passing and shot blocker positioning.

All skill levels can be accommodated. Comfort in deep water and some knowledge of water polo is helpful but not required. There will be a parent/athlete information session at the end of the program where parents and athletes can direct their questions to these former international coaches on how best to reach their water polo goals.
