Water polo is a team water sport that is played by millions of people around the globe. Perhaps you had a chance to watch a game or two in the recent Rio Olympics! In addition to its own unique rules, water polo features a number of strategies and rules that will be familiar to those that have played soccer or basketball.
The Surrey Orcas Water Polo Club offers introductory, recreational and competitive water polo programs for male and female players. Our athletes range in age from 5 years to adult.
The Surrey Orcas offer a shallow water program for non or beginning swimmers (Splash), introductory sessions for school gym classes, and a range of recreational and competitive programs for all ages of athletes. Players will enjoy practicing in two of the best Water Polo facilities in the province – The Guildford Recreation Aquatics Centre and the Surrey Sport and Leisure Aquatic Centre!
If you have made it to level five of the Red Cross Swim Kids program and/or are comfortable in deep water, you are ready to play this great game. If you are not ready for the deep water, come join our Splash program where you can learn the fundamentals in the shallow end of the pool and move up when you are ready.
In addition to our recreational program for both children and adults, Surrey Orcas is excited to offer competitive athletes an alternative to Pacific Storm and Fraser Valley high performance clubs with our BCPL (BC Provincial League) and NCL (National Championship League) options! All players are eligible to start playing in the recreational BCSSA Scrimmage League and BCWP sanctioned Lower Mainland Water Polo League (LMWPL).
Our programs run from September–December, January–April, May-June, and July-August. You can join at any time during the season! You are always welcome to come and try a practice. Practices consist of dry land training and lots of time in the pool. Our recreational players play one game a week in the Lower Mainland Water Polo League and BCSSA Scrimmage League, wrapping up with a high energy tournament at the end of our fall and winter seasons. Our more advanced players play an additional 5 tournaments in the Provincial League and 3 tournaments in Western Canada with the potential for participation in Western and National Championships!
At the end of the fall and winter seasons we host a Surrey Orcas social event complete with a parents vs. the athletes’ game for all of our deep water participants. Those parents brave enough to jump in the water will understand firsthand just how fit and talented their young athletes have become. For those not quite up to the challenge that elect to be spectators you are responsible for guaranteeing delicious refreshments for all at the end of the game!
Both facilities the Surrey Orcas train in offer a full range of programs and equipment for the general public’s use. Working out while your athlete is training is a great solution for parents struggling to find time for their own fitness program. Many parents forge work out buddies during the season and try out new things. It is a great way for families to stay fit together!
